Delivery hours row rumbles on

THE Tories have joined calls to restrict late-night superstore deliveries.
Tory Hawkedon councillor Michael Firmager, who is defending his seat at the May 6 Wokingham Borough Council elections, said: "We Conservatives are against deliveries during anti-social hours. Asda must be more responsive and appreciative of the community's concerns. But saying that, Asda and all the other shops in the complex provide a valuable shopping resource and are widely used."
The Chronicle has reported that Lib Dem Hawkedon ward candidate Anthony Vick has condemned Asda's plans for its Lower Earley store, which if approved would allow it to deliver at all hours except 2-4am and extend its warehouse so loading and unloading could be done inside.
Mr Firmager (pictured) is also chairman of Earley Town Council's leisure committee and says he is fighting the election on his record of getting things done for Sol Joel Park, getting work underway to refurbish the Laurel Park pavilion and campaigning against speeding.
He said: "I recognise that there's a lot more to do, but we've been working with police and youth workers to tackle anti-social behaviour and graffiti, for more to be done to stop flooding and for road safety. I'm fighting a positive campaign."
Asda says it needs its permitted delivery hours to be relaxed to ensure it always has fresh produce for customers, but many neighbours fear lorries late at night will disturb their sleep. A decision is expected next month.

Report commentThere's a very good chance that ASDA will appeal if the planning officer or planning committee at Wokingham Borough Council refuse their application. If you'd like to oppose this application and any future appeals please sign our on-line petition at http://ourcampaign.org.uk/NoNightDeliveries .
On the Laurel Park Pavilion, I applaud Michael's efforts to re-open the pavilion, but the question has to be asked: what did Michael Firmager do to stop Wokingham Borough Council closing the pavillion in the first place? He is after all a councillor on the Conservative held Borough Council. Is it Conservative policy to close down Borough Council facilities and re-open them with Town Council money to rebalance the accounts?! It doesn't seem like joined up thinking to me.
