GROUPS who have benefited from charity donations this year are gathering to celebrate people's generosity.

Grateful people and organisations will tell their stories at the Woodley and Earley Lions Club's presentation evening at Earley's CResCent Resource Centre in Warbler Drive tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm.

Lions spokeswoman Alison Keen said: "As well as our usual fireworks display we have held a jazz evening, a quiz night, a race night with another one coming up in May, and we shouldn't forget our Christmas sleigh and collection for hampers for the needy."

Among the recipients were the 84th Reading Earley Cub Group, which got money towards an overnight stay on the Golden Hinde in London last month - their main 'adventure' of the year. Little Acorns pre-school in Twyford got cash towards equipment and The Bridges Resource Centre in Woodley's Colemansmoor Road got money towards the vibro-acoustic chair for its sensory room.

The centre supports children and teenagers with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.

Resource officer Gareth Owen said: "It's been enormously beneficial. We deal with lots of young people, some of whom have extremely challenging behaviour, so it's great that this piece of equipment is unbreakable.

"Other pieces of equipment in the sensory room have to be replaced quite regularly.

"We have a longstanding link with the Lions - they helped fund the sensory room in the first place."

The Lions also gave money to John Sinnerton, of the Rainbow Trust, who was sponsored for his bike ride across India, and volunteer paramedics the First Responders got an extra first aid kit to help people in distress.

Ms Keen said: "There have also been lots of individuals who we have assisted, whether it is sport-related, or to improve their lifestyle such as funding a wheelchair or helping a family with impaired children attain their dreams."
