EARLEY Town Council leader Chris Edmunds has died.

The 46-year-old had been ill in recent weeks, but his death this morning came as a complete shock to his wife Jane and his three children.

Cllr Edmunds, who lived in Moor Copse Close and worked in insurance, was also on Wokingham Borough Council's executive with responsibility for social care. He attended last night's full council meeting, where he spoke in favour of joining Reading's Transport Innovation Fund (Tif) bid.

His friend and fellow Earley councillor David Chopping said: "Everything he did, he did with commitment. He was a young man with a full-time family and a full-time job. It's such terrible news and my thoughts are with Jane and the children."

Council leader Cllr David Lee said: "This sad news has come as a great shock to his many friends and colleagues at the borough council. As lead member for social care, Chris was a highly respected councillor and much liked by all who worked with him - both at the council and in Earley where he worked for his residents so diligently over many years. He will be thoroughly missed by everyone who knew him. At this time, our thoughts are with Chris' family and friends."
