EARLEY has a new Mayor.
Cllr John Armstrong took the ceremonial chain of office from Cllr Andrew Bradley at an Earley Town Council ceremony last Wednesday.
He joked: 'As a resident of Earley for 44 years I suppose I have now reached a pinnacle! I hope to be able to carry on the good work of Andrew and his predecessors.'
Council leader Chris Edmunds said: 'John"s contribution to the council, both inside this building and outside, has been exemplary. He has a 100% attendance record - you can"t beat that.'
Cllr Armstrong, 75, is a retired printer and publisher who worked for Reading University for 20 years. He is originally from west London, but now devotes himself to Earley, with prominent roles on the neighbourhood action group, Wokingham Older People"s Forum and Senior Action Group Earley (Sage) among others.
Cllr Peter Willis was elected deputy mayor for next year.
There are also changes on the council"s three powerful committees, where much of the work gets done.
Cllr Michael Firmager will take over as chairman of the amenities and leisure committee and Cllr Tim Chambers is now chair of the planning committee. Cllr Norman Jorgensen is staying chairman of the policy and resources committee.
