PLANS for new public toilets for the town centre have moved a step closer after councillors revealed an order has been placed.
Residents have already voiced concerns about paying to use the new loos, which will cost 20p to use.
Politicians clashed when the old toilets in the Headley Road car park were closed down and a petition was launched demanding the town council build new toilets.
Former council leader Keith Baker previously stated the funds from the Sandford Park development could be better spent regenerating areas like Woodford Park.
However, an independent survey was carried out across the town and the vote came back in favour of new toilets.
Cllr Baker said the lead time for the project would be no longer than 12 weeks.
He added: "It is costing the council and therefore residents through town council tax a subsidy of £20k a year. It will be located next to the vets at the Waitrose end."
