A CAR flipped onto its roof, smashing through a set of traffic lights spilling petrol across the road in a late night crash.

The driver was passing the Showcase Cinema when the crash took place shortly before 11.30 last night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene late on Thursday, March 30, and cordoned off a section of the roundabout.

The driver was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital suffering from a head injury.

One bystander, who did not wish to be named, said: "It looked awful.

"As I drove up I could see there were emergency service vehicles everywhere.

"There was even a fire engine parked in the cinema's car park.

"There was an ambulance rushing off with the sirens blaring.

"Some people were walking around who looked unharmed but one of the cars had completely flipped over and wiped out a set of traffic lights."

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "We were called to the Winnersh roundabout at 11.12pm yesterday to a single vehicle road traffic collision."

Recovery teams arrived at 2am with the Highways Agency clearing the spilt fuel from the road.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said the ambulance was on the scene for half an hour.

"We were called to reports of a single vehicle accident with car having rolled onto its roof.

"The driver was reported as out of the vehicle with a head injury.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance which took the patient to the Royal Berkshire Hospital."
