A CHARITY that provides support and care for the over 50's and people with dementia has gone into administration.

Woodley Age Concern went into administration last week and Wokingham Borough Council called in their care company Optalis to keep services at the South Lake Crescent centre running.

Woodley Age Concern was set up more than 60 years ago as a luncheon club with the Day Centre opening in 1973.

They offered respite care along with day care, a specialist dementia day care unit, clubs and social events as well as personal services.

Speaking at Wokingham Borough Council's meeting on Thursday, March 24, Anthony Pollock, executive member for economic development and chairman of Optalis said the company provided services as a last resort in these situations.

"Yesterday [Wednesday, March 23] the council called upon Optalis to step in and take over the services provided by Woodley Age Concern who went into administration this week," he said.

"Optalis have deployed senior managers yesterday and today to ensure that the service to the vulnerable residents of Woodley was maintained and the council continues to discharge its responsibilities.

"I am very pleased that Optalis has been able to step in efficiently and effectively thus demonstrating the value of its role as the council's provider of last resort."

Both Woodley Age Concern and Optalis have been approached for comment.
