EVER wondered how long it takes firefighters to douse a burning car? These firemen managed to do it in less than three minutes.

The footage shows a crew from Wokingham Road Fire Station in Earley tackle a flaming Toyota Yaris on Chalfont Way two-weeks-ago.

Their rapid response meant the fire was out and the road cordoned off without any harm to the driver or passersby.

John Irvine, watch manager at the station, told the Chronicle about the process his crew go through when dealing with these situations.

He said: "We turned up, we had to go beyond the vehicle. Because the smoke was blowing we took ourselves into clean air.

"The hose reel was dragged by the breathing apparatus [crew member] and he started fire fighting initially.

"The driver was the pump operator at the scene [charged with fetching the water] and the other crew member was in the back of the truck putting on breathing apparatus.

"The firefighter was kept upwind so he was not getting into the fumes himself. The driver then dropped off some cones, they were taken beyond the fire to cordon off the road."

While the firemen battled the blaze, other crew members spoke with the driver of the car to make sure there were no gas cylinders or anything which could explode in the flames.

Mr Irvine continued: "The fire was dealt with by the man in breathing apparatus.

"We sent a message to the control centre to let them know we have arrived and what is going on.

"The police then turned up at the scene and we handed over to them.

"We pushed the car to the side of the road once we made sure the fire was 100 per cent out."

Mr Irvine added if drivers see smoke coming from a car they should immediately stop, get everyone a safe distance away from the car and dial 999.
