THE ROOF of a Woodley home has been destroyed in a fire.

The blaze initially caught alight on the roof of a semi-detached house in Wright Close before firefighters rushed to stop a neighbouring property from being damaged.

Sections of the roofs could be seen to have completely caved in while firefighters using a ladder sprayed water into the smouldering gap.

Fire crews in breathing apparatus stood in the loft of the neighbouring house monitoring the scene and ensuring it did not spread to both homes.

One of the families who lived in the damaged properties said they were "alive and well" but did not want to talk.

Thames Valley Police confirmed they had been called to the incident at around 3.50pm today and the road is currently closed off while firefighters tackle the blaze.

Fire crews and police officers remain on scene but a spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service confirmed they had been called but no one sustained any injuries.

A police spokesman said: "We were called today a 3.50pm to reports of a roof at a house in Wright Close that was alight."

"No casualties have been reported but officers are on the scene along with the fire service and at the moment there is access only for emergency vehicles."

Darren Barrett, watch manager at Wokingham Road fire station, said: "When we got there smoke was issuing from the roof and within a few minutes the hole roof was fully engulfed in fire.

"There was 100 per cent roof damage and it came down on to the first floor.

"In the other house was smoked a little in the loft but was not damaged.

"A fire investigation is still ongoing into the cause."
