A VOLUNTEER who shaved her head for charity has raised more than £1,400 for Sue Ryder.

Joanne Murdoch, from Earley, volunteers at the Sue Ryder store in Wokingham Road once a week.

The mother-of-five decided she wanted to do more to raise money for the foundation close to her heart.

So she decided to brave the clippers and lose her long blonde hair.

The 46-year-old said: “The head shave went very well and, although I’m feeling very bald and it was a bit chilly this morning, I have managed to raise more than £1,400.

“The reason behind it is I work at the shop as a sales assistant and wanted to do some fundraising and came up with the idea of having my head shaved, and I gave myself a target of £1,000.

“Sue Ryder cares for terminally ill patients and their families, and cash raised in our charity shops goes towards the care we give at our hospice, The Duchess of Kent in Tilehurst.”

The hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children.

Mrs Murdoch paid tribute to her sponsors, including Asda, Tesco and Forget me Nots, as well as her family for supporting her.
