A SURPRISE proposal stole the show at the glamorous Roebuck Oscars award night last week.

Customers at the Roebuck pub put on their finest attire and walked the red carpet for the pub's second awards night on Saturday August 29.

The Meet & Eat pub in Auckland Road, Earley, was fully decked out for the event, including an 'Oscar' statue and a specially designed stage.

Guests worse black tie to the ceremony, where 18 different tongue-in-cheek awards were handed out, such as most loyal customer, best staff member and most entertaining guest.

But in a surprise twist, regular punter Jamie Flatman got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend Kristina Viveash, surrounded by all their friends and family.

The couple first met at the awards night last year, and Mr Flatman has been a regular customer at the Roebuck since 1973.

Landlord David Rigg, who spearheaded the event for the second year running, said it was a incredible moment to watch.

Mr Rigg said: "We were absolutely packed out. It was such a fantastic night and everyone made a real effort to dress up for the occasion. The awards went down a storm and Jamie’s proposal was the icing on the cake. As the setting for their first meeting, it was a real honour to help Jamie pull off this surprise at the Roebuck and I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to the happy couple.

“We are like a big family here and it was such fun to properly celebrate all the best bits about our loyal customers. Our Roebuck Oscars will be the talk at the bar for some time to come.”

One of the more serious awards on the night went to Thomas McNelly, who landed the Special Recognition award.

Mr McNelly was awarded for his charitable contributions for Tommy's, a charity which funds medical research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

Mr Rigg said Mr McNelly was the "benefactor" from fundraising at the awards night, pocketing more than £600 in donations.

"We run the event to remind everyone how much we value our customers and our place in the local community," said Mr Rigg.

"The Roebuck Oscars brings everyone together and lets us say thank you to our customers in our own unique Roebuck way."
