DOG WALKERS are being warned to keep their pets out of an Earley beauty spot after a surge of algae.

Maiden Erlegh lake has had a rare influx of algae this week.

The Earley Environmental Group have sought help from the environment agency, but in the mean time have told dog walkers not to let their pets in the stream or the lake.

Grahame Hawker, senior park ranger for Earley Town Council said: "We seem to have a small amount of algae on the surface of the water.

"What we really need now is some heavy rainfall to get rid of it.

"We just need to make sure that there is enough oxygen in the water, so we have put in a couple of pumps to pump in some extra oxygen.

"We have asked the environment agency to come and have a look and give us some advice."

A sign which was put up to warn residents said: "We are experiencing unusually high levels of algae. Whilst we await advice from the Environment Agency you may want to keep your dogs out of the stream and lake."
