A RESIDENTS’ “nightmare” is coming to an end after the borough council agreed to paint yellow lines along Woodley roads.

Parents on the school run have been parking their cars along Campbell Road, Nightingale Road and Livingstone Gardens in Woodley.

Cars have churned up the grass and blocked drivers’ line of sight as they pass through.

Thames Valley Police complained to Wokingham Borough Council in September 2014 and challenged the council to impose double yellow lines along stretches of Nightingale Road and Livingstone Gardens.

They also called for restricted waiting single yellow lines along a section Campbell Road near to South Lake school.

Now councillors have agreed that something has to be done about the hazard.

Anne Wayborn, of Campbell Road, agrees with the council’s decision.

She said: “It’s a good idea.

“I live opposite the school, and it’s a nightmare to park there especially during the school run, it’s absolutely awful.

“They park all up the verges and they mess up all the grass.”

Donald Rawson, also of Campbell Road, said he was unsure whether or not parents would take notice of the new restrictions when it came to the start of the school term.

Mr Rawson said: “Knowing what people will do, I don’t think they will observe the new rules very well.

“There really isn’t much parking for people coming to the school and there’s lots of traffic.”

The 74-year-old added that he believed a better solution would have been to take some of the school’s area away to enable more parents to drive into the school grounds to drop off their children.

Councillor John Kaiser approved the decision following a report from senior traffic management engineer Michael Horton at meeting of the borough council meeting on August 11. The new rules will come into effect from September 1.

There will be no parking at any time along stretches of Nightingale Road and Livingstone Gardens.

However, there will be restricted waiting times between 8am and 4pm in Campbell Road.

Mr Horton said: “Thames Valley Police contacted the council in September 2014 and asked officers to look at parking issues at the mini roundabout associated with parking for South Lake Primary School.

“Parents are parking too close to the mini roundabout and this is causing reduced visibility for drivers using Nightingale Road as they approach the mini roundabout.”

Cllr Kaiser said he expects the new lines to be painted during the next two weeks. He added: “This is very much a safety issue.

“The lines will be there because parking was getting to a point where it was dangerous. It enables the traffic to flow during peak school times.”

The lines will cost the council £600 to paint and will be paid for out of the revenue budget.
