PUPILS were given a thought-provoking visit by a Holocaust survivor this week.

Rudi Oppenheimer returned to Theale Green School to give a moving talk to year 9 students about his experience as a Jewish child living in Nazi Germany during the 1930s and 40s.

The 85-year-old visits a number of schools to share his horrific story of the concentration camps.

He said: “I am the little boy who stood at the barbed wire fence and saw. I have made it one of my life’s missions to ensure people do not forget. We must learn the lesson so that others don’t have to suffer.

“I find it so rewarding and important to share my experiences with young people who might not otherwise know what went on.”

Rudi, his brother Paul and his sister Eve were deported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp when he was just 12 years old and although all three survived the ordeal, their parents and grandparents did not.

Year 9 student Sean Dyer added: “Rudi is a gifted presenter that made us both laugh and cry at his recollections of the Holocaust. The journey he took us on was powerful and was further amplified by its depth and specific details.”

Rudi also brought along his brother's book 'From Belsen to Buckingham Palace' and took some time at the end to sign copies of the book for the students.
