CHILDREN struggling with learning disabilities will benefit from a significant donation after more than £30,000 was raised at the annual race day in Newbury.

West Berkshire Mencap, a charity which supports young people and their families, enticed a crowd of 300 visitors to Newbury Racecourse on Friday (March 3) for the 13th year of the event.

Charity patrons and Julian Swift-Hook, Mayor of Newbury, were among the distinguished guests at the fundraiser, which has been described as 'the best one yet' by the charity's owner, Leila Ferguson.

She said: "What a brilliant day. We’ve all been blown away by everyone’s generosity. We are indebted to everyone who came, our wonderful staff and volunteers and local businesses who donated fantastic raffle prizes.

"It was the best one yet and it is thanks to you that we have raised this brilliant sum, which will help us to sustain and improve the services we provide locally for people with learning disabilities.

“We have already sold many tables for next year’s event and would urge anyone who wants to enjoy our 2018 race day to book as soon as possible.”

Patrons of Mencap, including former Eastenders actor Ricky Groves and former Reading FC midfielder Mick Gooding spoke at the fundraiser, while a number of lucrative prizes were handed out as part of a silent auction.

Guests had the opportunity to pick up a Brazil football shirt signed by Pele, a dream holiday to Cyprus and a Downtown Abbey experience day.

“Lorraine Chase and Ricky Groves did a rousing job of selling champagne table to table," Leila added.

"Each glass cost £20 but included a label which gave the chance to win a necklace and earring set worth more than £800.
