THIS is the scene of the horrific crash which tragically killed the leader of West Berkshire Council’s wife after he accidentally drove on the wrong side of the road.

Roger Croft was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following the fatal collision, while his wife Grizelda, known to friends and family as Zelda, sadly died.

The Chronicle has learned the devastating collision of February 9 occurred after Cllr Croft accidentally drove on the wrong side of a country lane and he was not able to avoid an oncoming Volvo.

The couple had been in France visiting their son Malcolm, who lives near the historic-town of Laon, around 90 miles north of Paris.

While Conservative politician Cllr Croft, 67, has remained in hospital for more than a week due to the extent of his wounds, his wife, 69, was declared dead at the scene despite reported attempts to save her.

French police confirmed: “The woman who died in this accident is indeed Grizelda Croft.

“Roger Croft is still being treated at the hospital in Amiens. He is in a serious condition and as a result he has not yet been able to tell police about the circumstances of the accident.

“They drove in an orange Honda Jazz on a small country road near Laon. The accident took place in a straight line. “Roger Croft, who was driving, drove to the left, as one would in England. An unintentional error.

“They have a son who lives in the area.

“Roger and Grizelda, as is always the case in France when there is an accident, were sampled to see if they had consumed alcohol or drugs. The samples were sent to the laboratory but the results are not yet known.”

It is not yet known how long Cllr Croft will remain in France before he can return to his home in Hammond Close, Thatcham.

Residents in the area said they were stunned to hear the news of Zelda’s tragic death, while wishing Cllr Croft a fast recovery.

Ros Cockman, said: “They are a lovely family and they’ve lived here as long as we have. They are a very pleasant family. My children went to school with their children. They keep themselves to themselves.

“We have been here for about 20 years so they have been here for even longer than us. Our heart goes out to the family.”

Karen Dougal, added: “I knew who he was because of his role as a councillor and I say hello to him sometimes.

“I would like to pass on my best wishes to him and the family. With greatest sympathy for your loss. Praying for your speedy recovery.”

Cllr Graham Jones, deputy leader of the council, will immediately take the role as leader until further notice.

Cllr Hilary Cole has been appointed as acting deputy leader.

A spokesman for West Berkshire Council added: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Councillor Roger Croft and his wife have been involved in a serious car accident while in France.

“Roger’s wife died in the accident and Roger has been seriously injured and is currently in hospital in a stable condition. Our thoughts and condolences are with Roger, his family and friends.”
