A DEFENCELESS man was punched in the face and kicked as he lay on the ground.

Between 3am and 4.40am on Sunday, January 15 a 23-year-old man was approached by two men outside the Slug and Lettuce Pub, Newbury.

He was punched so hard in the face he was left with a broken jaw and kicked in the midriff as he lay on the pavement at Market Place.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said the men then fled towards The Wharf, but they have now made two arrests in connection with the incident.

"The victim, a 23-year-old man, was in Market Place outside the Slug and Lettuce pub sometime between 3am and 4.40am on Sunday, January 15 this year," he said.

"He was then approached by two men, one of whom punched the victim, who fell to the ground.

"The victim received treatment at the John Radcliffe Hospital for a broken jaw.

"Two men, aged 19 and 20, both from Thatcham, have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

"They have both been released on police bail until March 13."
