BRAINBOXES and regulars at a Newbury pub have helped raise £1,700 for charity.

Husband-and-wife team Nick and Ali Green at the Starting Gate pub organised the weekly quiz in aid of their chosen charity.

Throughout the past year regulars at the quiz have raised £1,700 for West Berkshire Mencap.

"Thank you to everyone who comes to the quiz week in, week out and raised this money for this amazing charity," said landlady Claire Seymour.

"We choose a different charity every year and this is the most we’ve ever raised.

"We chose West Berkshire Mencap as we like to support good causes in the local community and they have been coming in every Wednesday for five years."

West Berkshire Mencap CEO Leila Ferguson said: “We are so grateful for this money which will help people with learning disabilities to have a better life.

"The Starting Gate have been so welcoming to us and very supportive.”

The Brummell Road pub's next fundraiser is tomorrow (Friday, November 25) night.

Newbury Ladies Football Club will be hosting a race night from 7pm in aid of West Berkshire Mencap and Dingley's Promise.
