Fall in jobless total
THERE has been another fall in the number of jobless people claiming unemployment benefits in the region.
According to the latest figures released yesterday (Wednesday), the claimant count in Reading fell by 90 between November and December to 3,500, which is 3.3% of the working age population.
Wokingham also saw a fall, from 1,503 (1.4% of the working age population) to 1,461 (1.4%).
In West Berkshire, there was a tiny rise of three people, with the figure standing at 1,814 (1.8%).
South Oxfordshire, which reported small rises in jobseekers over the summer, was down 69 at 1,186 (1.4%).
Across our area, 198 fewer people were signing on this month compared to the month before.
Nationally, there was a fall of 1,200 to 1.46m. On the broader measure of total unemployment, including people on long-term benefits, there was an unexpected rise of 35,000 to 2.5m.
