MORE than 1,200 children will receive a Christmas present this year thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers.

The annual Toys and Teens drive, organised by Reading Family Aid (RFA), has had another successful campaign after receiving thousands of generous donations.

It is believed that 600 families will benefit from this year's collection, after 10,000 toys were donated, sorted and delivered to social workers over the last week.

Rob Wilson MP, who visited the charity's base at St Luke's Parish Hall on Friday, said: "Reading Family Aid has been making a huge difference to families in Greater Reading for over 40 years, and continue to ensure that every local child will be smiling on Christmas morning.

"The committee members work hard all year round, giving assistance to families in need. I want to thank the committee and the volunteers who collected, sorted and packed the enormous range of toys and gifts for children and teenagers. It's been an incredibly successful appeal."

The toys were collected between October 20 and December 5, before being shipped to social workers and deserving families across Reading.

Wendy Howell, chair of RFA, added: “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Reading this year. Thanks to the support of each and every individual, company, school, faith and social group who donated to the Toys and Teens appeal.

"We are also hugely thankful for the support of our sponsors, to all of the many donation points for taking in the toy donations, and to the many many volunteers, whose help during the toy packing week was absolutely essential."

Reading Family Aid offers year-round support to disadvantaged children and monetary donations are welcomed. In addition to the Toys and Teens appeal at Christmas, they arrange trips to the seaside, the pantomime and London Zoo.
