Police were called around 3.30pm after someone reported a concern for the man's welfare. He was seen sitting on the barrier of a bridge over Reading's Inner Distribution Road.
Officers arrived on the scene and talked the man down. The man was detained at 4.25pm.
The man was sitting on barrier along the Howard Street bridge.
A police spokeswoman said: "We were called to a fear for welfare incident relating to a man. We were told the man was sitting on the bridge over the IDR at 3.34pm. We built a report with the man. He was detained at 4.25pm."
