The crew from Whitley station were performing home safety visits on Brayford Road, Whitley when the fire began.
The man had been doing repair work on his car earlier in the day but the wiring for the passenger window began smoking and burning when he started the engine.
The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was hurt in the incident.
