The chairman of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is to step down, it has been announced this morning.

Stephen Billingham has decided that he cannot devote enough time to the role because of his external interests.

A spokesman for the Trust said he was to step down in the Spring after joining the Trust in 2012.

The Council of Governors will be conducting a process to select a new Chair and Mr Billingham will work with them to get this done as soon as is practicable.

He said: "I am proud to have been associated with the Royal Berkshire and the quality service that it provides to the local community.

"I am pleased to have been able to recruit Jean O'Callaghan to be our Chief Executive and support her in her work to improve the management and finances of the Trust.

"There is much more work to be done and I have every confidence that Jean, the Board and the Executive team will continue to make progress."

" I have been privileged to have worked with a large number of enthusiastic doctors, nurses and support staff who everyday deliver great health care - it has be."
