The group, formed two years ago, is called Firing Blanks and the song is Rockin’ at Christmas.

It was released last Saturday (November 15) in time for the Yuletide market.

The unlikely pop stars are all members of the 11th Training Battalion REME, based at the Arborfield Garrison, Borough of Wokingham.

They are lead vocalist Major Fraser Dowling, 34, on lead guitar, Corporal Graham Webber, 29, backing vocals and sleigh bells, Staff Sergeant Fraser Bott, 32, on rhythm guitar, Lance Corporal Dan Williams, 26, on bass — with civil servant (MoD) Simon Pavitt, 27, on drums.

Corp Webber said: “We have not ruled out the possibility that we could top the charts as the best Christmas single. It is a rock number written by Fraser Dowling.”

He said the band started as a live group at the Army camp in Aborfield in 2012 and they later performed at a 'Party in the Park’ at Cyprus.

The name came from the use of soldiers firing dummy ammunition.

Corp Webber added: “We have moved on from karaoke and see no reason why we cannot be recognised as a real band. We have been featured already on Forces’ TV programmes.”

Proceeds from their efforts will go to the Royal British Legion and the National Foundation for Youth Music, a charity for underprivileged children.

All group members are married, with children, apart from bachelor Dan.
