Councillors slammed the plans for 3,500 new homes on the site of the old army base after claims that a key route through Whitley was forgotten in the traffic summary.

Members of the planning applications committee at Reading Borough Council unanimously objected to the two sites in protest over the A327 being left out of the transport management plan.

Cllr Tony Page, transport leader, said: “I think we should deplore the fact that Wokingham Borough Council obviously took the decision to ignore us. I shall be registering a formal complaint with Keith Baker, leader of the council.

“He is fully aware of the need to talk to us. It will have a huge impact on Reading. They are not going to be going to Wokingham to shop, they will be going to Reading, as most sensible people in that area do.” Planning officers in Reading estimate up to 30 per cent more traffic would enter the town via the A327 and recommended that councillors object to the plans until further details on the impact can be made available.

Two separate plans for developments at Arborfield Garrison and Hogwood Farm have been submitted to Wokingham Borough Council and are out for public consultation until January 1. As the neighbouring authority, Reading borough has the right to object to projects which may have a wider impact on the region.

Up to 1,500 of the new homes would be built on the site neighbouring Reading FC’s training camp Hogwood Park.

Cllr Page said: “The other thing that concerns me greatly about the plans is the lamentable detail about their public transport strategy. I had a look at the brief and it is made clear that there should be early engagement with bus operators. Have they spoken to any of the local bus companies? Have they?

“Reading is the magnet. It is the place where people will want to go to and it is about time Wokingham woke up to that. These people will not be going to Hampshire or Bracknell, they will be coming to Reading. Wokingham sits down with us and works with us on the third bridge and yet ignores us with this. It is just unforgivable.”
