THIEVES stole a life-size model of a horse from Birch Copse Primary School in Tilehurst on Monday.
The giant fake animal was taken some time during the night and was reported missing in the morning by the caretaker who noticed the equestrian statue was missing.
It had been secured to the ground with metal bolts and head teacher John Micklewhite said: “I don’t know how on earth they managed to take it and get it over the fence, it’s enormous and very heavy. The children are shocked and disappointed but also a little bit surprised that someone was able to do it.”
The horse is covered in flags of the world which were painted on by children as part of a competition earlier in the summer.
Schools across Berkshire were given the 6ft white fibreglass horses and encouraged to decorate them with a World Cup theme. The finished articles were displayed at The Racecourse Newbury, before being returned to the schools.
Mr Micklewhite said: “The children worked really hard to decorate the horse and we can’t quite believe that it’s been taken. I can’t imagine where anyone has managed to hide it.”
Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
