A BURGHFIELD primary school has set its sights on scoring top marks with an education watchdog after boosting its rating.

Garland Junior School, off Clayhill Road, was rated 'Good’ by Ofsted following an inspection last month, with two third of pupils now reaching Level 5 in reading and maths.

Inspectors listed the school’s “harmonious community” and the “motivating and interesting lessons” as reasons for its progression since the last inspection in 2012, when it was stamped satisfactory.

Headteacher Sarah East said: “We are well on a path of continuous improvement and on the way to becoming an outstanding school.”

The report noted that to become outstanding, teachers will need to be more flexible and adjust activities when pupils show they can achieve them.

Higher ability children should also be helped to develop their writing skills and construct longer pieces and complex sentences.

Mrs East added: “We are already working hard on the two areas that Ofsted highlighted for improvement and I would like to thank everyone involved with the school for their commitment and energy which has helped us to achieve this great result.”

West Berkshire’s education leader, Cllr Irene Neill, is confident the school will reach its target and said: “This is wonderful news and something that every member of the school, governing body and parents can be proud of.”
