Fay Dellimore, best known for completing Ironman events and swimming the English Channel, spoke to more than 200 children at Sonning Common Primary School in Grove Road on Wednesday last week, for the second year running.

The 50-year-old discussed her experiences racing in triathlons to encourage the children to join On Your Bike – the school’s charity cycle race – on Sunday, April 27.

She said: “It’s always very inspiring to me to talk to kids. They’re so receptive and open, and they really want to do their best – it recharges my batteries!”

Josh Day, 10, accepted a £300 bike voucher donated by AW Cycles in Caversham on behalf of his mum, Nikki.

He has cycled the 12 mile route in previous years and has set his sights higher, aiming to take on 20 miles with Nikki, his dad and sister Lucy.

He said: “My mum’s going to be really happy she won the draw. She’s got quite an old bike, so now she’ll be able to get a nice new one in time for On

Your Bike.”

Fay has qualified for the 2014 Ironman World Championship in Canada in September and added: “If you’d asked me when I entered my first ever race if I’d be in a world championship one day, I’d have laughed.

“The fact I’ve qualified this year is an achievement in itself and I’m excited about that.”

On Your Bike starts at 10.30am on Sunday, April 27, at Sonning Common Primary School and riders can pick from six, 12 and 20-mile routes.

Enter online at www.onyourbikesonningcommon.co.uk or register on the day.

Cash raised from the event will be split between the school, Sue Ryder and the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.
