TRADITIONAL Olympic sports were turfed out in favour of an egg and spoon race, tug of war and bean bag throwing when a charity hosted its own version of the games.

Launchpad in Reading marked Volunteers Week last month with an Olympic day at Kings Meadow, where budding athletes competed in sack races and the three-legged sprint before fueling up on a barbecue.

Winners were presented with medals and trophies at the event, which aimed to promote the work of volunteers who help the homeless charity.

Marketing manager Amanda Rose said: "The day was a great success, even the sun shone and everyone was competing on a level, from Launchpad clients, to volunteers and staff.

"Everyone helped with the organisation of the event including cooking and making the podium from scratch, and the surprise of the event was the tug of war result with the girls and smaller competitors overturning the giants!"
