A LANDMARK elephant statue has disappeared from outside a village hotel.

Staff turned up for work at The Elephant in Pangbourne this morning to find that the 5ft tall and 6ft wide metal structure had become the latest target for thieves cashing in on the high price of metal by preying on statues, war memorials and graveyards.

Sophie Taylor, assistant manager of the Church Road hotel, said: "We believe it was still there last night when the hotel closed up between 11-11.30pm and I didn't even know it was gone until a member of staff came in this morning and asked where it had gone.

"It was commissioned and made in India, but although it's not of great financial value it's extremely precious to the team here. It's a bit of a landmark and we think someone must have gone off with it."

Anyone with any information should contact the police on the non-emergency police number, 101, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or go to www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
