Station Hill plans unveiled tomorrow

REGENERATION plans for Station Hill will be on public display at Reading Town Hall's 3Bs Cafe tomorrow from noon-7pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm.

Representatives of Sackville Developments - a joint venture between Benson Elliot and Stanhope - will also be at the exhibition to answer questions.

The proposed development includes a mix of offices, apartments, shops, restaurants, cafes, leisure facilities and car park. It also involves the demolition of the disused Friars Walk shopping centre and Western Tower.

Benson Elliot and Stanhope spokesman, Ben Johnson, said: "We have been working with the council on this new scheme for Station Hill over the last 11 months or so and now very much look forward to sharing our draft proposals with everyone this weekend.

We hope that lots of people who live or work near this important site can attend the exhibition and give us some feedback."

LaSalle Investments are working up new proposals for the demolition and replacement of Thames Tower, and Sackville Developments has pledged to working closley with the company to ensure the two developments complement each other.

  When they unveiled it all back in 2009, I think it was, they promised a new community pub (as opposed to vertical-drinking bar type establishment).

  Usual Croydon on Thames approach to urban design apparently preferred by our Cllr Page, Council officers and our consultants. They have supported this make the developers rich project all along. When will we give mediocrity the heave-ho? Goodbye Tony are you the weakest link to having half-decent design and a functioning town?
  
  There has been a serious miss-brief on the station area regeneration project, and that is obvious by the concentration of this plan - absolute yuk. Worryingly we no longer have CABE to pass sensible comments.
  
  Advance warning the building may function using less energy, but you pay for it upfront in the build. So although you can claim it is environmentally friendly and sustainable it is if it stands the test of time - buildings last a few score years these days.
  
  The scheme in short is rubbish. But it will pass the planning stages only because as I started it is an inside job.
