A DRIVER is in hospital tonight after a two-car smash in Beenham.

Fire crews from Newbury and Dee Road were called to Grange Lane at midday when the blue Vauxhall Calibra and black Vauxhall Astra were involved in a collision.

A 24-year-old man, who was driving the Calibra and complained of back and leg pains, was cut out of his vehicle by fire fighters.

He was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital by ambulance.

Speaking to the Chronicle, a motorist said: "It was pretty nasty. There were people lying on the road and the driver was cut out. It wasn't very nice."

Thames Valley Police and ambulance crews were at the scene.

The road was re-opened at 2.30pm.
