Revamped Tilehurst pub re-opens on Friday
A REFURBISHED Tilehurst pub officially re-opens Friday afternoon.
Neighbours and new staff will gather to see the red ribbon cut at The Water Tower, formally The Bear, in Park Lane, following its £500,000 makeover.
The 80-year-old pub, which has been boarded up for three years, has been fitted with a bar, plasma television screens, pool table and darts board, and a new menu specialising in grilled steaks served on hot skillets.
Tilehurst man Darren Steward, 38, will perform the official opening at 4pm - his prize for winning a competition run by our sister paper, the Reading Midweek, to think up the pub's new name. His inspiration was the landmark water tower, which has stood in Park Lane since 1932.
Darren said: "I'm thrilled to have won. I feel strongly about the pub and I'm honoured to have had an impact on its future.
"The pub is an iconic part of the town, just as the water tower is. I felt it was appropriate, given their proximity to each other, that the pub begin its new life under a name that represents the town's heritage."
The pub has been taken over by Spirit Pub Company, which has made it part of its Flaming Grill brand and has brought 30 new jobs to the area.

Report commentNo matter how much they tart the place up you cannot change the clientèle that will frequent it. The Bear was ruined by such locals and this place will fare no better as those people still live a stones throw away...
