THREE more wards have been shut to new admissions at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after further outbreaks of the winter vomiting bug norovirus.

Staff closed the wards to new patients for a minimum of 72 hours over the weekend.

But two other wards hit by the bug last week reopened on today (Monday) and yesterday respectively and hospital spokesman Joe Wise said the trust is poised to reopen a third ward within 24 hours.

A hospital bay, in which a patient also contracted the illness also reopened on Saturday.

Mr Wise said: "Thankfully it is only a small number of people who have been affected and we are anxious to take all possible steps to ensure its effects are minimised."

Anyone who has suffered sickness and diarrhoea should wait at least 48 hours until their symptoms have cleared before visiting friends and family in the hospital and should prevent the spread of infection by washing their hands with soap and water before preparing food and after visiting the toilet.
