The school is open today (Tuesday)

A NURSERY and infant school in Burghfield Common is closed today following a flood on Friday.

Mrs Bland's Nursery and Infant School was forced to shut last week when a pipe burst at lunchtime on Friday and water gushed through the hall and kitchen.

Staff returned to freezing conditions at the school in Jordan's Lane this morning and discovered the heating was not working - forcing them to close the school for the day.

Headteacher Alison Lewis, said: "At lunchtime on Friday we had a major flood in the hall and in the kitchen, which would have been devastating if we were not in the school. The staff were absolute troopers and cleaned up the water to allow for lunchtime to run fairly successfully, but we had to send the children home earlier than normal because of health and safety.

"When we come in this morning we found that the heating was not working and engineers are now working to determine if the two are linked.

"Obviously we never make the decision to close the school lightly, but we rely on the engineers to ensure the school is safe and we hope to be open again tomorrow."

The cause of the problems are still being investigated.
