Olympic dream is worth much more than gold
OLYMPIC legend Dame Kelly Holmes joined revellers at a gala dinner in aid of her efforts to support underprivileged Reading youngsters through sport.
The glitzy Party In The Sky at Reading Hilton attracted more than 200 people and raised thousands of pounds for the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust's Get On Track Project - set up in the town two years ago.
The profits from Friday's extravaganza will also be used by the Reading Partnership Board 2012 to run community events celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics.
Dame Kelly, who won both the 1500m and 800m at the 2004 Athens Olympics, told The Chronicle she is delighted businesses in particular had supported the evening, and added: "It is business that can really help young people through apprenticeships and job opportunities."
Her work in Reading includes mentoring and volunteering initiatives and she dismissed critics of the London Games who point to inflated budgets and question marks over the use of facilities once the sport comes to an end.
Dame Kelly, who secured tickets for the 1500m in the ballot, said it will be a chance to further involve young people, and added: "The inspiration that comes from sporting success is huge. Sport can change them as a person, provide purpose in life and self-belief."
Also on the guest list was Olympic bronze medal winning rower, Sarah Winckless, a member of the British Olympic Association. She said: "It's brilliant to be involved with a Games in our home country and events like this, which will help people outside London share the experience and celebrations, are great.
"I have been to see our rowers in Caversham and they are working hard every day. It is a huge opportunity for them and will be a great experience. The Olympic Games is an absolute privilege to be a part of."
Pam Warren, organiser of Party In The Sky, which included a silent auction, added: "It was a really good night, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it all came together, just as I envisaged."
