STUDENTS were evacuated from a halls of residence after a late night kitchen fire.

Crews from Wokingham Road and Whitley Wood were called to Benyon Hall at Reading University's student village in Sherfield Drive at 10.20pm last night to deal with a fire in one of the ground floor flats.

Two officers in breathing apparatus used one hose reel to battle the flames and students were also evacuated from the second and third floors of the building so that firefighters could clear smoke from the area.

Firefighter David Grayson said: "We were there for just under two hours, but everyone was evacuated safely.

"The fire began in one of the kitchen units and the cause is under investigation, although it is not being treated as suspicious."
