A TWYFORD couple had a lucky escape when an extractor fan caught fire in their house this afternoon.

The man and woman, thought to be in their forties, smelled the smoke from the utility room in their house in Broad Hinton at 4.30pm and called the fire brigade, while they extinguished the flames themselves.

Fire crews from Wokingham Road and Wokingham spent 30 minutes at the scene and crew manager Gary York, of Wokingham Road fire station, said: "Fortunately the couple had managed to put the fire out themselves and stop the fire from spreading to anywhere else. We were there in a supervisory role."

The fire is thought to have been caused by a fault in the extractor fan, which was destroyed in the blaze, and only minor smoke damage was caused to the utility room.
