Baby drama mum in bid to find rescuer
A WHITLEY mum is searching for the "kind-hearted" mystery woman who delivered her baby in a hospital toilet.
The complete stranger swooped to 31-year-old Leanne Penn-Greenaway's rescue when son, Patrick, arrived unannounced on Saturday at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Leanne, from Hartland Road, Whitley, said: "We arrived at around 10pm, but I was sent home about an hour later because I was only three centimetres dilated. But while we were waiting for my parents to pick us up, my stomach cramped suddenly and I knelt on the floor in pain."
Leanne rushed into a toilet, screaming for help after realising she was bleeding. She said: "My husband David took one look, said 'oh my god', and ran to get a midwife."
He asked the mystery woman and to stay with Leanne who said: "I looked down and saw the baby's head facing me because he was the wrong way round, but she calmly told me not to worry. It was all over within 15 minutes and I was shaking and in shock when David arrived with a midwife.
"The lady turned to him, said, 'Congratulations, you have a son', and then just washed her hands and walked off."
Patrick weighed in at 7lbs 10ozs and Leanne was able to take him home the next day to join 30-month-old old big brother Cormac.
Leanne said: "I have no idea who this lady is and we just want the opportunity to say thank you."
Hospital midwifery director Gill Valentine said: "On this occasion nature caught everyone involved unawares. It was a really unusual case - with a happy ending."
The dark-haired woman is slim, in her 30s, wore a black jacket and dark-coloured trousers and had a young boy with her.
