Jobs axed at struggling Reading retailer
JOBS have been axed at the Reading head-office of a nationwide children's clothing retailer.
Deloitte was appointed administrator yesterday for the British arm of Pumpkin Patch, which has more than 35 stores and employs 400 people, and made five people redundant at its Broad Street headquarters.
The company's only Berkshire store, also in Broad Street, remains open, with Deloitte attempting to find a buyer. But five shops, in Cambridge, Cheshire Oaks, Leeds, Swindon and Uxbridge, were closed, leading to 55 job losses.
Joint administrator Daniel Butters said there is no deadline to find a buyer, and added: "Pumpkin Patch Limited has suffered as a result of the unprecedented and prolonged downturn being experienced in the UK retail sector. We will continue to trade the business while we explore all strategic options.
"We encourage all parties to remain supportive while we continue to trade the business, thus providing the best possible platform for us to preserve jobs and value for all creditors."
Interested parties should contact Matthew Nicholson on 0113 292 1749. Suppliers should contact Darren Morrison on 0118 322 2460.
Peacocks also remains open in Reading, Wokingham, Newbury, Bracknell and Maidenhead - which employ 61 people between them - as KPMG tries to find a buyer for the struggling business.

Report commentHardly surprising. With the economic crisis showing no sign of abating and immigration running riot this sorry trend will continue. The Conservatives need to recognise the many mistakes of Labour and do something quickly before this country hardly resembles Britain at all. Although judging by the multi-cultural third world slum Reading has become they clearly need to do this sooner rather than later. On a plus for (any overseas parties) it is very easy to travel here, claim benefit and bleed the system dry...

Report commentWith all the chavs and immigrants popping out babies I'm surprised Pumpkin Patch didn't survive. Perhaps they were just too expensive?
