MORE than 1,000 people have paid tribute to a "beautiful and talented" 12-year-old girl who died after reportedly believing she had an eye infection.

Ciara Wooller was admitted to the Royal Berkshire Hospital on Saturday evening before being transferred to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, where she died on Monday.

Within hours hundreds of her school friends began logging on to social networks to express their shock and leave heartfelt tributes, with more than 900 joining a Facebook page dedicated to Ciara, who was in Year 8 at Theale Green Community School, where they describe her as "stunning", "sporty" and "a sweet and happy girl".

The Facebook page, entitled 'R.I.P our beautiful, best friend, Ciara Wooller', says the popular schoolgirl was initially admitted to hospital with an eye infection, which spread to her brain. She was then put on a life support machine, which was turned off three days after she was admitted into hospital, it claims.

But Ciara's death is now being investigated by The Thames Valley Health Protection Unit (HPU) and Dr Muhammad Abid, consultant in communicable disease control, said: "We are working with our NHS partners; Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and NHS Berkshire, and medical investigations are ongoing.

"At present we are not aware of the cause of the illness and are awaiting testing results. We advise that school routine should continue as usual".

Sue Marshall, headteacher of Theale Green School, said: "Ciara was a lovely girl and a very popular student who was valued by teachers and fellow students alike. She was particularly talented in sport. She had a passion for football but she also excelled in hockey and athletics.

"She was an influential team player; her skill and determination to achieve motivated others. She always encouraged and praised others. She had an overwhelming positive attitude to life which was a credit to her and an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

"She will be greatly missed by everyone at Theale Green Community School."
