A CONTROVERSIAL planning application that has caused uproar among residents was deferred last night.

Wokingham Borough Council planning committee deferred a decision on an application submitted by Asda in Lower Earley to extend its dock shelter by one metre so that it can accommodate 4.8 metre high double decker lorries.

Councillors raised concerns about the supermarket's plans to conduct a trial to extend its delivery hours when the larger lorries are supposed to reduce the number of deliveries made to the store.

Suggestions were also made about putting a condition on the size of the lorries and increasing the height of the fence next to the docking bay.

Chairman Simon Weeks said: "I think we should engage with Asda to see if we can get an improvement.

"It could come back that Asda refuse to co-operate with us, but we will be no worse off than we are now, and we need advice to take this forward."

The application is due to come before the committee again next month.
