Crash: Police and paramedics survey the crash site in Prospect Street.

POLICE have launched an investigation after an elderly motorist died soon after his car left the road in Caversham today (Thursday).

The man, in his 80s, was turning into Prospect Street at the junction of Peppard Road and Henley Road at 11.55am when his silver Peugeot 406 mounted the pavement, bumped into a wall and came to rest against a post outside the Prince of Wales pub.

Police sealed off part of Prospect Street while paramedics took him to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, but the pensioner, from Tilehurst, died later. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Lucy Anderson who lives across the road from the pub, said: "It was very chaotic - there were so many people there and I saw the paramedics trying to resuscitate him, covering him up and putting him in the ambulance."

She added: "It's very sad - especially just before Christmas."

Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact PC Mark Sanders on the new Police Enquiry Centre number 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
