POLICE are hunting the driver of a stolen car which plunged into the River Thames in Reading this evening.

A member of the public reported seeing the mystery red car going into the river near the Hills Meadow car park at around 5.30pm and said it quickly sank beneath the fast running water.

Crews from Whitley Wood, Wokingham Road, Dee Road and Caversham Road fire stations went to the scene along with the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service's water rescue unit.

Firefighters went into the water to establish that nobody was inside the car and passed its registration number to waiting police officers who were able to confirm that it was stolen.

Recovery experts will not pull the car out until they can work in daylight tomorrow.

Thames Valley Police are looking for witnesses who may have seen the driver running from the scene and want them to call the 101 non-emergency number with any information.
