A MAN was rescued from the Holybrook by firefighters last night.

The Caversham Road crew arrived on the scene at 1am and the police, already present, said he had been in the water for an hour.

After being lifted out near Mallards Row the man was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital to be treated for potential hypothermia.

Crew manager Tony Smith told The Chronicle: "He was not in a good way and it was important to get him to hospital straight away. He was extremely cold."

Mr Smith took the opportunity to remind people of the dangers of entering the water late at night this winter.
