POLICE arrested five football fans at Reading railway station on Saturday after tempers ran high between followers of Millwall and Leeds United.

Millwall supporters, who had seen their side held to a late draw at the Madejski Stadium, clashed with Leeds fans returning from a defeat at Southampton on the first day of the Championship season.

British Transport Police Inspector Chris Maddox said: "The vast majority of supporters travelling through Reading station on Saturday were well-behaved, law-abiding and in good spirit, however, as is often found, a small minority seemed intent on causing trouble."

Five men - three Millwall supporters and two from Leeds were arrested at around 8pm - after a fight broke out on platform five as a Manchester-bound train arrived in the station. After questioning they were all released on bail until next month.

Inspector Maddox added: "Any abusive language, racism and anti-social or intimidating behaviour towards members of the public and genuine fans is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"Those who think they can behave in such a way should know that we will not hesitate to take action and will seek banning orders to prevent them from attending future matches."
