THE RULING Tories comfortably held on to the Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward in yesterday's Wokingham Borough Council by-election.
John Halsall polled 850 votes - 66% of the total ballot on a turnout of only 29.38% - which gave him a 578 majority over Liberal Democrat Martin Alder, who came second with 272.
The vacancy was created when sitting Tory Claire Stretton stood down in May after winning a seat on Windsor and Maidenhead council where she lives.
The rest of the voting yesterday finished: Matthew Dent (Labour) 94; Andy Heape (UKIP) 55; Martyn Foss (Green) 19.
The Conservatives retain their overwhelming majority on the borough council with 45 seats to the Lib Dems' nine.
