Campaigners launch inaugural fundraiser
DETERMINED residents are stepping up the action in their fight against the building of a waste incinerator by launching their first campaign fundraiser.
Residents from Hermitage, Curridge, Chieveley and surrounding villages are furious about waste firm Grundon's proposals for a huge plant on the Old Kiln Quarry site, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, near Junction 13 of the M4.
A fundraising sub-committee of the West Berkshire Against Grundon Incinerator, (WBAGI) action group which took shape in January, launched the first event to raise money for the Fighting Fund on Monday to finance the campaign.
Walk Against Grundon will see dog-walkers, horse-riders and ramblers of all ages taking part in a countryside walk across the earmarked land on Sunday, March 27, to highlight its recreational uses.
WBAGI head of fundraising, Suzanne Ross, said: "Every fundraising campaign has to begin with a single step. This is ours.
"Our public rights of way are important to us and we felt it was a great way to show that many people in the local area regularly enjoy the countryside as a part of their recreational activity." Press officer Kate Mills said: "We hope that several hundred people will turn up on the day because we know hundreds of local villagers are very angry."
"This fight could go on for a long time and we are up against a huge firm so we need all the funds we can get to help us to make fliers, hire legal advice and organise meetings."
Participants will meet at Curridge Women's Institute Hall, at 3pm on March 27, and the walk will last about an hour, with WBAGI suggesting a minimum donation of £5 for adults and children joining in for free.
Other planned events include a children's disco, pub quiz, family fun day and an X-Factor style talent competition.

Report commentDo you mean Junction 13? Junction 12 is Calcot and this incinerator seems to be planned for just by Chieveley Services.
