WORK to resurface one of Reading's busiest stretches of road is beginning tonight and will last for six nights.
Chatham Street, between Bedford Road and the Inner Distribution Road roundabout - including the roundabout itself - will be resurfaced between 7.30pm and 5am each night with the work being completed on Sunday morning.
Reading Borough Council spokesman Oscar Mortali said: "The work will take place at night because of the high level of traffic which uses the route, so that disruption to road-users' journeys will be kept to a minimum. We apologise in advance for any disruption caused to residents and road users by these works."

Well done Oscar.......finally a comment from the council that admits what an important part of the road system Chatham st. roundabout is. Perhaps RBC would like to explain why it is council policy to conspire with a private developer (Muse Developments) to destroy the southern portion of the roundabout and the 2 south facing slip roads , so that the IDR can be 'decked' over and buildings erected on top, sending the diverted traffic around Great Knolley st, Weldale st. and Greyfriars rd.
Presumably our new Con-Dem council ,with their policy to save roundabouts and make traffic flow will now change council policy on this issue. I'd like to think so , but I won't hold my breath!

tbak303 where did you get that idea? Last I heard the stopping up was going ahead and a public enquiry will now ensue. I hope that Cllr Willis will reverse this policy.

tbak303..............'put on ice' might be the correct terminology.....it has most certainly not been scrapped......it is RBC's policy and it still exists ! There may be no money in the pot at Muse Developments at the moment , but that doesn't mean that the plan is dead.
Likewise I would hope that Cllr Willis will see the importance of this major roundabout junction.
