GLEAMING new bus shelters are sprouting up all over town - despite a delay after the old ones were taken away.
The council's new bus stop advertising contract with JC Decaux has started and the old shelters which have already been ripped out are gradually being replaced. They will now be cleaned every fortnight instead of monthly, and have been praised for looking better and being nicer to wait in. Town centre shelters will be cleaned weekly.
They are being installed over the next few months at a rate of eight a week.
The only older-style shelters still standing are those owned by the council and will also eventually be replaced.
Transport leader Cllr Richard Willis said: "They are much more aesthetically pleasing and a great improvement for anyone who is sitting, waiting for a bus."
Former transport leader Tony Page admitted the old contract with Clearchannel, signed by the council in 1994, was flawed and said he was glad JC Decaux had taken over.
